Scandinavian design and home cinema aren’t natural bedfellows – one is all light, calm and restraint, the other is built for drama. This Barnt Green project, currently in progress, brings the two together: a media room where clean Nordic styling and serious cinema performance share the same four walls.

Every detail is designed to disappear until it’s needed. The speakers sit invisibly within the ceiling and behind the fabric wall, while layered lighting transforms the space at the touch of a button – sheer curtains and a flooding skylight by day, blackout drapes, sculptural arc lamps and firelight when the main feature starts.

The vast modular sofa means the whole family watches together, not in rows. It’s a deliberate move away from the traditional tiered cinema layout – this is a room for film nights, box-set marathons and big sporting occasions, where everyone can stretch out, pile in or claim a corner. The U-shaped configuration wraps the room and faces the screen as one, so nobody gets the bad seat, and on quieter evenings it works just as well as a place to read under the arc lamps with the fire going. Comfort, here, is part of the spec – not an afterthought.

Scandi Media Room (Before)
This before image shows where things stand on site – a stripped-back shell of steel framing, first-fix cabling and stacked plasterboard, with the screen and speaker positions already marked out on the walls. The renders above show where it’s heading: an olive acoustic fabric media wall, warm timber slat panelling that curves around the room, and a suspended fireplace floating at its heart.
